Working with us


Volunteers are an invaluable and vital component of our services to patients, families, visitors and caregivers. They generously give their time, expertise, skills and experience to help us provide our patients with the best possible care.

Our volunteer team consists of over 130 volunteers from diverse backgrounds and age groups, who work in various roles throughout our hospital. We are looking for a weekly commitment of between 4 to 15 hours per week. Shift times vary depending on the volunteer position and are generally 4 hours between Monday to Friday, however we do have weekend shifts available in our Emergency Department.

Volunteer requirements

To be a St John of God Geelong Hospital volunteer you should:

  • Be 18-85 years of age
  • Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Have a strong commitment to serving people
  • Be able to make a minimum 12 months commitment
  • Take pride in your work and appearance
  • Protect patient and visitor confidentiality
  • Be accountable, reliable and respectful
  • Demonstrate compassion and understanding
  • Be interested in learning new skills and flexible to undertake a variety of roles
  • Be committed to ongoing relevant training
  • Be physically able to perform the role
  • Satisfactorily pass a police clearance and provide a current Working with Children Check
  • Provide referees to comment on your suitability for the role

Hospital Auxiliary

Our hospital is also supported by the Hospital Auxiliary, a generous group of volunteers focused on fundraising to provide equipment for patient comfort and care.
